About "St. George Balikagram"
The issue of female foeticide is a growing concern, and in response to this alarming trend, the Balikagram was established to provide a safe haven for the daughters of leprosy patients. This noble institution was founded by the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Mission Board in Kerala in the year 1993. Located on the Pune-Mumbai Highway, approximately 28 kilometres from Pune, St. George Balikagram boasts a modern, well-equipped building that serves as a sanctuary for these deserving girls.
Within the campus, there is also a school dedicated to educating and nurturing the children who reside at Balikagram. The leadership of this institution is in capable hands, with H.G. Dr. Yuhanon Mar Thevodoros Metropolitan serving as the President, Very Rev. K. I. Philip Ramban as the Director, Very Rev. Silvanos Ramban as the Co-Director, and Rev. Sister Elizabeth as the Manager. Mr. Sajan Thariyan dutifully serves as the Treasurer, while the day-to-day operations are efficiently managed by the dedicated convent sisters.
At Balikagram, female children of leprosy patients who have not been affected by the disease are welcomed with open arms, regardless of their caste, creed, or religion. This inclusive approach reflects the institution's commitment to providing a nurturing environment for these young girls, ensuring that they have the opportunity to thrive and lead fulfilling lives.
